One–on-one with Carmindy
TV’s makeup guru shares pro tips & tricks for summer…and beyond.
BY BROOKE SAGER
You probably know Carmindy as the makeup artist on the hit TV show What Not To Wear, where she’s been transforming women from blah to beautiful for ten years. She’s also penned three beauty books and co-created a cosmetic line, Sally Hansen Natural Beauty inspired by Carmindy. We chatted one-on-one with the beauty pro about how to complement your hair with makeup, the top summer trends, her fave products and more!
Hair Winners: We know that tailoring your makeup to your haircut is a must. Any suggestions?
Carmindy: Short cuts are often geometric and fashion forward, so you want to come up with a signature look and rock it! A bright lip, smoky eye or a liquid liner will make it look trendy and chic. With long, flowing hair, you can get away with less makeup—keep it to black mascara and sheer lip gloss for a beach-y, summery look. Bangs are great for covering up un-groomed brows, but eye shadow can get a little lost—playing with lip color is a better way to go.
HW: What about makeup and hair color?
C: Hair color is a huge factor in choosing which cosmetic color palette will bring out your skin’s undertones. If you’re blonde, play around with cool hues like pinks. A brunette’s skin tone will look more neutral, so use roses and browns for definition. If you’re a redhead, think warm peaches and coppers. With jet black hair, go with dark eyeliner or a red lip so you don’t look washed out.
HW: What will be trending in makeup this summer?
C: Vibrant gel and liquid eyeliners in teal, turquoise, aqua and emerald will be huge; the color will line the top lid to create a sweeping wing while the rest of the lid is nude. Lips will also be bold in colors like red, orange, fuchsia and hot pink, but will be sheerer than last season’s opaque trend.
HW: What are your top summertime makeup tips?
C: Use waterproof mascaras and eyeliners to prevent smudging in the heat and humidity. It’s also good to carry blotting papers in your purse so skin and makeup don’t get cakey.
HW: What should every girl have in her cosmetic drawer?
C: Disposable mascara wands. After applying mascara, twirl a clean wand through your lashes while it’s still wet to create separation and prevent clumps.
HW: When it comes to makeup, what’s your number one “what not to wear”?
C: Too much bronzer! Applying it all over the face can result in a dirty look. You want to strategically swipe it on the temples, sides of the face and under the cheekbones in a C formation—this keeps the center of your face bright, creating a glowing, contoured finish.

Top Beauty Blunders
So what are the biggest mistakes women make with their makeup? According to Carmindy, topping the list is the “epidemic of over-plucking eyebrows.” If you accidentally go overboard, put the tweezers down and fill in sparse areas with an eyebrow pencil. Another “ don’t” is putting on makeup without first applying a sheer foundation and a dusting of powder. “Makeup on bare skin won’t stay or blend and can also change color.”
